C.J. Mosley had flashbacks as has ran down the field Thursday night hoping to return an interception for a touchdown.

The Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker thought back to last year’s game against the Washington Redskins, where he fumbled a near pick-six trying to reach the foo baltimore orioles custom jersey tball across the pylon for a touchdown. The Redskins came back to win that game, and to make it even worse, Mosley pulled his hamstring on the play and had to m Boston Red Sox iss the next two games.

“That last one hurt me,” Mosley said after the 40-0 victory. “I was like, ‘I’m not about to fumble this.’”

Mosley showed as he neared the end zone that he learned his lesson from last season. He hopped over a tackle attempt by an offensive lineman, and then put two hands tightly on the football as running back Jay Ajayi ran down the fi http://www.ecustombaseballgears.com/ eld to make the tackle.

Mosley clutched the ball and tumbled into the end zone after the tackle attempt by Ajayi, capping off a 63-yard touchdown that was the first pick-six of his career.

“I saw [on] the ‘Jumbotron,’ I saw Ajayi come in so I went, ‘Yeah, I don’t care if I score or not, I’m making sure I’m not fumbling the ball,’” Mosley said. “It was just a good play. You know, right place at the right time.”

The ultimate goal is always a parade, but to get there, some starry performances are generally needed throughout the year.

Andrew Benintendi
It is hard not to feel good about Benintendi’s chances of being a top contender for the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Not many rookie-eligible players come into a season with the credentials Benintendi already has. The top prospect in baseball according to MLBPipeline.com was a regular for the Red Sox down the stretch after his promotion from Double-A last year, slashing .295/.359/.476. in

The outfielder does everything for the Red Sox, and last year, it was nearly enough for him to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award in just his second full season. Betts finished second to Mike Trout for the coveted trophy last year. At the age of 24, there’s reason to believe Betts can still get better. Look for the electrifying right-handed hitter to also be a finalist for the Esurance Player of the Year Award, which covers both leagues. Last year, Betts won the

MAKE THE HELP GREAT AGAIN – “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re folding Wilbur Ross’ laundry.” Arthur Delaney, Ben Walsh and Amanda Terkel: “President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for commerce secretary admitted at his Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday that he recently fired a household employee who could not provide proof that they could legally work in the country. Having undocumented household help has sunk at least two previous cabinet secretary nominees. Billionaire private equity executive Wilbur Ross told the Senate Commerce Committee that when he hired the worker in 2009, the person provided what looked like a valid driver’s license and Social Security card. After Ross was nominated by Trump, he asked all his household staff to provide such documentation again. ‘When I was getting ready

OBAMA HOLDS LAST PRESS CONFERENCE, DEFENDS MANNING COMMUTATION – It was, uhhhhhh, a lengthy, uhhhhhhh, affair. Sam Levine: “President Barack Obama said Wednesday he believes that efforts to make it more difficult to vote in the United States are an extension of the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. ‘There is an ugly history to that that we should not be shy about talking about,’ Obama said during his final news conference. ‘The reason that we are the only country among advanced countries that makes it harder to vote is, it traces directly back to Jim Crow and the legacy of slavery. FINALLY, A SECRETARY OF THE ARMY MICHAEL GRIMM CAN GET BEHIND – Short of ending our lives by driving off a cliff in a flaming motorcycle, this is probably the most dangerous thing on our bucket list. Michael S. Schmidt: “Vincent Viola, the billionaire Wall Street trader Donald J. Trump has nominated to be the secretary of the Army, was accused in August of punching a concessions worker at a high-end racehorse auction in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., according to a police report and local law enforcement officials. Police officers did not witness the episode. When officers arrived at the scene, however, the concessions worker had a ‘swollen bloody lip’ and said that Mr. Viola had punched him in the face, according to the police report…. UNCLEAR IF GAME WILL RECOGNIZE GAME – Zach Carter: “Private equity billionaire Wilbur Ross has agreed to sell more than 90 percent of his assets in order to avoid conflicts of interest if he is confirmed as commerce secretary. But at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Ross repeatedly refused to say whether Trump should follow his lead and struggled to explain how he would deal with policy decisions that affected the president’s bottom line. ‘As I understand it, the ethics rules that apply to Senate-approved nominees do not apply to the president,’ Ross told Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) when asked directly whether Trump should divest his businesses. ‘But simply as a matter of appearance and morality ― you were able to do it, why not the president?’ Blumenthal asked. Ross said he didn’t know how complicated the president-elect’s finances might be.” [HuffPost]

GREAT NEWS FOR FANS OF PERMANENT KIDNEY DAMAGE – Arthur Delaney: “President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday that he didn’t know one of the most basic things about drinking water safety. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) asked Scott Pruitt if “there is any safe level of lead that can be taken into the human body.’ The answer is a simple ‘no,’ but somehow Pruitt didn’t say that. ‘Senator, that is something I have not reviewed nor know about,’ said Pruitt, the attorney general of Oklahoma…. Pruitt shouldn’t need to look at the scientific research ― someone could just tell him. It’s not remotely controversial that lead, a deadly neurotoxin, can cause a host of health problems even in low doses. It can stunt children’s growth and permanently damage their young brains. Lead exposure has emerged as a plausible explanation for the rise
Custom Red Sox Jersey and fall of violent crime in the 20th century.” [HuffPost]

Area man benefits from very low standards: “Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt (R), President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, said during his confirmation hearing Wednesday that he does not believe climate change is a ‘hoax’ ― something Trump has claimed in the past. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) asked Pruitt about the president-elect’s past comments, while noting that 2016 was the hottest year on record. ‘I do not believe that climate change is a hoax,’ Pruitt said.” [HuffPost’s Sam Levine]

GOP TARGETING OBAMA RULES – Unless a bunch of fish caught in soda six-pack rings organizes a really effective Hill fly-in, a lot of Obama’s executive orders will be reversed. Mike DeBonis: “Next month, the House is expected to take up more targeted measures that would use fast-track procedures to undo several recent rules issued by executive-branch agencies…. Among the regulations on the Republican chopping block are new Interior Department rules aimed at protecting waterways near coal mines and preventing the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from oil and gas wells, as well as a Labor Department rule that expands overtime eligibility. Democrats, along with major labor, consumer and environmental groups, are warning of significant and lasting harm to the public from the GOP push. A list of targets from the hard-line House Freedom Caucus includes school-lunch nutrition guidelines, renewable fuel standards and anti-tobacco programs.” [WaPo]

HALEY BREAKS WITH TRUMP ON RUSSIA – This is going to come back to haunt her in the waning days of the 2024 campaign when the FSB refuses to help her overcome a five-point polling deficit against Democratic nominee, Rachel Platten. Akbar Shahid Ahmed: “South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told a Senate hearing Wednesday that she opposes two of Trump’s most controversial positions: his determination to build a partnership with Russia and his support for a registry of Muslims in the U.S. ‘Crimea is Ukraine, not Russia,’ Haley said, criticizing Moscow’s two-year occupation of the region and its ongoing conflict with the pro-European government in Ukraine, which has claimed close to 10,000 lives. She would not support lifting Crimea-related sanctions on Russia until President Vladimir Putin makes some concessions to the U.S., she added. ‘Russia is trying to show their muscle right now…. I don’t think that we can trust them,’ Haley said. “ [HuffPost]

FRIENDLY REMINDER ABOUT ONE OF TRUMP’S INAUGURAL PASTORS –Remember: You can’t spell “Jesus Christ” without no less than three of the letters in “Benghazi.” Christopher Mathias: “An evangelical pastor who thinks Islam is ‘evil’ is set to deliver prayers on Friday at the inauguration ceremony for a president-elect who thinks ‘Islam hates us.’ Rev. Franklin Graham is among six faith leaders chosen by Donald Trump to offer their prayers, benedictions or other statements during Trump’s swearing-in on Jan. 20…. A month after the 9/11 terror attacks, Graham, speaking at the dedication of a new chapel, told an audience that Islam ‘is a very evil and wicked religion.’ Pressed to clarify his comments by NBC, Graham said, ‘It wasn’t Methodists flying into those buildings, it wasn’t Lutherans. It was an attack on this country by people of the Islamic faith.’” [HuffPost]

BECAUSE YOU’VE READ THIS FAR – Here’s a dog that’s a chair.

WASHINGTON INSTITUTIONS ALREADY BANNING JOURNALISTS – Damn it, at least give us a chance to consume way too much alcohol at the bar before you do this. Daniel Lippman: “The Trump International Hotel in Washington is banning the media from its premises during inauguration week. “Media is not allowed in this week in respect of the privacy of our guests,’ Patricia Tang, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing wrote in an email. A POLITICO reporter attempted to enter the hotel Wednesday morning for a previously scheduled breakfast meeting but was stopped at the door. He then identified himself as a journalist and was told ‘media’ was not allowed…. The hotel’s decision to ban media from property owned by the federal government and from a hotel controlled by the president-elect comes amid a broader debate over media access to the incoming administration. Trump has resisted forming a protective pool around him, instead opting for a ‘semi-protective pool’ that afford the media less access than previous presidents allowed.”

Customized Baltimore Orioles Jersey New York governor wants to spend more on education, lower taxes

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday proposed a $152.3 billion all-funds state budget for fiscal 2018 that would increase education funding by $1 billion and cut tax rates for 6 million middle-class residents, extending a
Customized Baltimore Orioles Jersey “millionare’s tax” to pay for them.Men’s Baltimore Orioles Alternate Orange Flex Base Authentic Custom Jersey.

His plan, released to the public on Tuesday night during a televised news conference, would also dedicate $2 billion to water infrastructure over five years and $650 million to life sciences research over the same period, proposals he Men’s Baltimore Orioles Alternate Black Flex Base Authentic Custom Jersey made in a series of speeches earlier this month.

The budget would spend an additional $750 million on economic development programs, $567 million on Medicaid and $163 million to help provide free college tuition for families earning less than $125,000 a year, an idea Cuomo called a “national precedent in college affordability.”

He would lower the different tax rates on households with incomes under
Custom Orioles Jersey $300,000 for an average savings of $250 next year and $700 annually once fully phased in.Women’s Personalized Boston Red Sox Authentic Home White Baseball Jersey Sale.

To offset those costs and close the state’s $3.5 billion deficit, other state spending would remain flat and he would keep for three more years an 8.82 percent tax rate on individuals making more than $1 million a year, or about 45,000 people.

The millionaire’s tax falls mostly on those living and working in and around New York City, the region’s primary source of economic activity, said Partnership for
Boston Red Sox Personalized Jersey New York City Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Wylde in a statement.

That rate that is “higher than almost any of our domestic and global competitors

Of the total budget, $98 billion is from state funds, or 1.9 percent more than fiscal 2017 – within Cuomo’s 2 percent spending growth cap.

New York’s fiscal year begins April 1. Rather than make a traditional budget address to the legislature, Cuomo met privately with groups of lawmakers earlier in the day.

Cuomo continued his push to build more infrastructure, saying he planned to
Custom Red Sox Jersey discuss the topic with President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday when the two men are scheduled to meet.

He said New York currently has about 500 infrastructure and economic development projects underway.

His love of infrastructure took an artistic turn when he proposed “illuminating

“Nothing like this has been done on the planet,” he said.

Corey, Corey, Custom Red Sox Jersey hallelujah: Tribe wins big G1

CLEVELAND — Corey Kluber walked off the mound to a thunderous ovation from his Progressive Field audience on Tuesday night. The Indians ace was
Custom Red Sox Jersey overpowering on the World Series’ overwhelming stage, delivering a classic performance against the Cubs that put Cleveland three wins away from baseball’s promised land.

In a 6-0 Game 1 victory, Kluber sliced his way through Chicago’s lineup in a

The leader of Cleveland’s staff set a World Series record with eight strikeouts in the first three innings and kept his foot on the gas for the duration of his start, outdueling lefty Jon Lester.

“He’s our ace,” Indians catcher Roberto Perez said. “Every time he steps on the
Customized Boston Red Sox Jersey mound, I expect big things from him. He was awesome. We had a good game plan going on before the game. We executed
Women’s Personalized Boston Red Sox Authentic Home White Baseball Jersey Sale pitches, and he was outstanding.”

Thanks to Kluber’s masterpiece, and a pair of home runs from Perez, history is now on the Indians’ side.

“I don’t know if there is one thing you can put your finger on,” Kluber said of his postseason dominance. “I think that it’s, obviously, there’s more riding on each game. So, not that there is less importance on a regular-season game, but it’s almost like you have that extra level of intensity or focus and stuff that it’s not really something you can replicate.”

The win was the first in the Fall Classic for the Indians since Game 6 in 1997, against the Marlins, who broke Cleveland’s hearts with a win in Game 7. For the Cubs, who have not won a championship since 1908 — 40 years before the
Custom Orioles Jersey Indians’ last title in ’48 — their wait continues. Not since Game 6 of the 1945 Series against Detroit has Chicago won a World Series affair.

“I’m not disappointed by any means except for the fact that we did not win,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of his team’s performance. “I thought we came out ready to play. They pitched well. … I know we had 15 punchouts, I get it, but the quality of the at-bats were not that bad.”

Did you know?

The Indians, who have been one of baseball’s best teams at home all season long, improved to 8-1 in the postseason with a 5-0 showing in front of the Cleveland faithful. The last 14 times that Game 1 of the best-of-seven Series was won by the home team, that club went on to hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy. Overall, teams

“We were fortunate enough to win this one,” Indians closer Cody Allen said. “We’ll enjoy it tonight, but we have to show up and be ready tomorrow. It’s a

Custom Red Sox Jersey 8 Red Sox connections to World Series

There is no World Series in Boston this year, yet there are compelling Red Sox-centric storylines all over a Fall Classic that begins on Tuesday.Women’s Personalized Boston Red Sox Authentic Home White Baseball Jersey Sale.

It’s hard to remember a World Series not involving the Red Sox that had so many
Custom Red Sox Jersey key participants who once called Fenway Park home.

Here is a look at those who will be of interest to Boston viewers.

1. Another World Series run for Tito
Watching Terry Francona celebrate October success in a visiting uniform at Fenway Park was a bit jarring to the fans he is still beloved by in Boston as his Indians swept the Red Sox in the American League Division Series. Francona’s legacy with the Red Sox is secure, as he helped bring the first two World Series championships to Boston since 1918. Now Francona — who managed the Red Sox for eight seasons — will put his 8-0 Fall Classic record to the test. That is already a
Customized Boston Red Sox Jersey managerial record for most World Series wins without a loss. Francona has pushed all the right buttons in recent weeks to help vault a Cleveland club that was viewed as the underdog when the postseason began.

2. Theo’s Chicago rebuild nearing history
Theo Epstein grew up two miles from Fenway Park before living his dream of running Boston’s front office for nine years. Ultimately, Epstein decided he needed a new challenge, so he went to the Cubs to try to put an end to a championship drought even longer than the 86-year dry spell he helped end in Boston in 2004. Upon his arrival after the 2011 season, Epstein gutted the
Men’s Baltimore Orioles Home White Flex Base Authentic Custom Jersey organization and set upon a rebuild centered on Draft picks.

If the Cubs can win it all for the first time since 1908, Epstein will probably be elected to the Hall of Fame at some point. His staff includes several faces who helped him in Boston, including general manager Jed Hoyer and senior vice president of player development and amateur scouting Jason McLeod.

3. Miller is the ultimate weapon
When Epstein and Francona brought Andrew Miller to Boston in 2011, he was an underachieving starter who was perhaps a victim of his own hype after being selected sixth overall in the Draft by the Tigers five years earlier. In ’12, Bobby Valentine — Francona’s brief successor — decided to try Miller out as a reliever.
Custom Orioles Jersey The lanky lefty improved with each season and was an important member of Boston’s championship team in 2013 before suffering a season-ending injury in July. The Red Sox traded Miller to the Orioles for Eduardo Rodriguezjust before the non-waiver Trade Deadline in ’14, and they were unsuccessful in trying to bring him back as a free agent the following offseason.

In four appearances, Andrew Miller strikes out 14 in 7 2/3 innings, earning the ALCS MVP award

Francona has used Miller at every key turn this postseason, and it has paid off. Miller was the MVP of the AL Championship Series; he has given up six hits and no runs while striking out 21 over 11 1/3 scoreless innings in this postseason.

4. Lester still thriving in October
In 2007, less than a year after he had overcome cancer, Jon Lester pitched the clinching Game 4 of the World Series for the Red Sox. The next season, he fired a no-hitter at Fenway Park, wrapping up in a memorable embrace with Francona at the end of that game. In ’13, Lester dominated in all three postseason rounds to help the Red Sox win it all again. The trade to Oakland at the Deadline in ’14 was a tough blow for the lefty, who had been drafted by Boston in ’02. The Red Sox might have gotten Lester back as a free agent following the ’14 season if not for the persistence of Epstein and the Cubs, who came up with a six-year, $150 million contract. Lester has been marvelous in this postseason, notching a 0.86 ERA in three starts. He was co-MVP of the NLCS.Youth Authentic Custom Baltimore Orioles Alternate Baseball Jersey Orange.

5. Indians aiming for party at Napoli’s
Though Mike Napoli wasn’t the best player on the 2013 Red Sox, he came to symbolize that team with his thick beard and penchant for big hits. Napoli wound up shirtless on Boylston Street following the World Series parade, and would love to re-create that scene in Cleveland, and it’s no surprise that “Party at Napoli’s” has become a rallying cry for Indians fans.

Napoli’s resurgence this season has been impressive after a couple of sub-par
Customized Baltimore Orioles Jersey years. He hasn’t gotten hot in this year’s playoffs, but he has a history of coming up big when his team needs it most.

6. Lackey going for third ring
The one common thread in John Lackey’s first two championships? He was the winning pitcher in both clinchers. After impressively winning Game 7 against the Giants as a rookie for the Angels in 2002, Lackey fired a gem for the Red Sox in Game 6 of ’13 against the Cardinals. When the righty underwent Tommy John surgery following the ’11 season for the Red Sox, it was unknown if he could regain his status as a front-line pitcher. Lackey has been a consistent force the last four years, and his competitive fire is evident every time he pitches. Lackey was traded out of Boston on the same day as Lester in ’14. He had a strong tenure with the Cardinals before signing with the Cubs last offseason.

7. Coco’s resurgence
Coco Crisp never quite replaced Johnny Damon in Boston, as the Red Sox had hoped he would. But he was still an important player during his three years (2006-08) with the Sox, and his defense was vital during the championship season of ’07. Crisp had been in decline as a hitter the last three years, but he’s already come up with two important home runs for the Indians this October.

8. Rizzo living up to promise
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was drafted by Epstein an McLeod in the sixth round of the 2007 Draft. In ’08, Rizzo was dealt with the tough news that he had cancer. Fortunately, like Lester, he recovered. Epstein dealt Rizzo to the Padres in 2010 as part of a blockbuster that brought Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox. Hoyer and McLeod were both working for the Padres when that trade was made. It was somehow fitting when Epstein, Hoyer an McLeod — by then, reunited in Chicago — acquired Rizzo in a trade for Andrew Cashner on Jan. 6, 2012. That trade turned Men’s Boston Red Sox Majestic Home White Flex Base Authentic Collection Custom Jersey into a steal for the Cubs, as Rizzo has belted 30-plus homers the last three seasons.

Custom Red Sox Jersey Sox celebrate Fourth in style, rout Rangers

BOSTON — The Red Sox that routinely overpowered teams with their offense at home earlier in the season have resurfaced the last couple of days, continuing with a 12-5 thumping of the Rangers in Monday’s Fourth of July matinee at

Down, 4-0, before even taking a swing, the Boston bats quickly shook off that deficit with one in the first and four more in the third against losing pitcher Nick Martinez to take the lead for good.Men’s Authentic Custom Boston Red Sox Home White Baseball Jersey Sale.

In the past two games, the Sox have scored 22 runs. They recorded season highs in hits (21), doubles (9) and extra-base hits (13) Monday.

The emerging Sandy Leon led Boston’s hit charge with a 4-for-5 performance that included three doubles as he lifted his average to .500 in 40 at-bats. Travis Shaw smashed three hits, including a homer that clanged high off of Pesky’s Pole in

“A big day up and down the lineup,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “What the bottom third of the order has been able to do over the last three or four games has been impressive, particularly the way Sandy continues to swing it. Driving the ball for extra bases, a lot of contact.”

Rick Porcello shook off the onslaught by the Rangers in the first and was

“We’ve been swinging the bat much better as the calendar has turned,” Farrell said. “There was no move to make from a pitching standpoint. Rick had to give us 100 pitches somehow, someway. I’ll be honest with you. He’s a tremendous competitor. This ballpark played tiny today, so anything was possible.”

Boston Red Sox Personalized Jersey Motherhood and Raspberry Pi: Challenges for Mothers in Technology

The lack of gender diversity in technology fields has become a hot topic of late,
Boston Red Sox Personalized Jersey for good reason. Women and girls are under-represented in computer science degree programs, even in comparison to other STEM fields. The number dips slightly as they enter professional careers, and drops more dramatically over the next 10 to 15 years, just as they could be reaching leadership positions — or starting families. Some explanations for the decline — discomfort with “brogrammer” culture, unintended or overt bias in reviews and promotion — have more to do with gender than family status. But women with young children face additional challenges to blend their work and home lives successfully. Tech companies and academic institutions must do more to foster welcoming and sustainable environments to mothers in technical fields,

Research over the last decade has documented the trend of women drifting away from technical careers. A landmark 2008 study in the Harvard Business Review found that “on the lower rungs of corporate career ladders, fully 41 percent of highly qualified scientists, engineers, and technologists are women. But the dropout rates are huge: Over time 52 percent of these talented women quit their jobs. Most strikingly, this female exodus is not a steady trickle. Rather, there seems to be a key moment in women’s lives — in their mid to late thirties — when most head for the door.” The study does not cite motherhood specifically,
Custom MLB Jersey but the timing of the women’s departure suggests a relationship to childbearing years. The dearth of women in academic leadership positions in “math-related fields” was also noted in a 2009 Cornell University study, which specifically cited family demands as a contributing factor.

By requiring women to make difficult choices between career and family, the tech industry and academia risk missing out on distinct contributions that come from the broader life experience mothers can bring. Becoming a parent inevitably changes one’s perspective; senior leaders have suggested from

Practical lessons include finely honed time-management skills, a ruthless sense for prioritization, and a rich set of conflict-resolution strategies. Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, notes “being a mother gave me a broader sense of purpose, more compassion and a better ability to prioritize and get things done efficiently. It also helped me understand the specific needs and concerns of mothers, who make most household spending decisions and control more than $2 trillion of purchasing power in the U.S.”

Given that a more inclusive and representative workforce can improve business outcomes and academic achievement, how can institutions encourage more women to persist in technical careers over the long term?

Provide role models and mentors for young colleagues. Women in senior leadership positions who manage family responsibilities can serve as role models and advocatesfor younger colleagues. The lack of such role models perpetuates the lack of women in tech fields overall: “The reason there aren’t more women computer scientists is because there aren’t more women computer scientists,” noted Jocelyn Goldfein, a director of engineering at Facebook. In addition to

Offer family-friendly leave policies for ALL parents. The tech industry is leading the wayin providing time for family leave, in part because it recognizes this benefit as attractive to the women they are trying to recruit and retain. The graph below, from a November 2015 report from The Century Foundation, offers a broad comparison.

Expanding paid family leave, in addition to being more humane and better for the health of parents and children, proves economically advantageous to the businesses as well, resulting in less employee turnover and increased productivity when parents return to work. In the same article cited above,

Allow for flexible work hours, job sharing, and remote work arrangements. Women frequently point to inflexible work arrangements and crushing workloads as reasons they left their careers when they became parents. Employees can be virtually available not only by email, but also to collaborate with distributed teams via online tools like Google docs or hangout, Skype, Slack, Trello, and the like. Working remotely can save money and be more productive for many, not just moms, and flexible policies can serve as a valuable recruiting tool for companies hiring talent in a competitive market.

Provide childcare facilities, family planning benefits. When Facebook and Appleannounced in October 2014 that they would cover up to $20,000 in expenses for female employees to freeze their eggs, a lively discussion ensued whether this was empowering for women who wanted to delay childbearing or more advantageous for the companies providing the benefit. While both employers and employees may stand to gain, asking workers to put off having a family simply delays discussions about improvements to infrastructure and corporate culture that would make it easier for women to navigate changes in work and family life successfully. More helpful to parents — and productive for employers — would be investments in facilities for nursing mothers or on-site childcare.

Create paths for women to return to the workforce after a leave. A 2009 survey showed that a majority of highly qualified women who leave their positions for family reasons intend to return to the field, and indeed 70 percent did so after a hiatus of roughly two-and-a-half years. (The academic tenure clock is less forgiving in this regard.) Still, mothers face a well-documented “penalty” in pay, performance reviews, and opportunities for promotion. Programs like Return Path provide employees with current skills needed by tech companies,

What about the women who stay? What can we learn about their motivations? Reasons behind their continued dedication to technical fields are at least two-fold. First, salaries in the tech industry are attractive. When a recent study of mothers in tech asked 912 women why they stayed, many cited money as an important factor, and 84 percent were, in fact, the primary breadwinners in their family. (Yet, a surprising number downplayed their accomplishments beyond their financial contribution; only about 1 in 10 mentioned being a role model for her children while a third mentioned her partner as the more positive influence.)

Second, and especially among academic leaders, women are more likely to articulate a genuine passion for the work. A computer science professor (and mother) who began her career in the 1950s attests, “I never considered giving up. I love science and the independence that it gives me.” When asked what contributed to her persistence in the field, another colleague was puzzled by the question: “I cannot say that I ever had a feeling of ‘persistence,’ since being a researcher is such fun (at least most of the time).”

Those women who manage to navigate the shoals of career and family inspire others by their dedication to both. A successful mid-career colleague explains: “It is a constant challenge to balance career opportunities with being a mother of two young children: not so much in the day-to-day because I feel we have optimized that very carefully. But the extra things — the travel to conferences and to give talks, the opportunities to serve on committees that require evening/weekend/or more travel, those things are very difficult, and I constantly feel the stress of having to say no to things that I really feel I should be saying yes to. On the other hand, I feel that I’m the luckiest person in the world to have these two amazing little children.”

Aside from including a more equitable representation of society, retaining mothers in technology positions throughout their careers will only enhance collective opportunities for innovation and discovery. In celebration of Mother’s Day, let’s recognize and promote the distinct contributions of moms in technology and engineering, and strive to create the institutional circumstances for them to flourish.
